The most unique aspect of this unique carving is that it has been done horizontally and the scene that is being depicted is different. With a dragon and a tiger terrorizing two men, the pain and awe is written on the men’s faces. The details on the clothes and faces are amazing as well as the proximity to the animals – both the dragon and tiger have a profound effect on the men. Look at the tiger and its paw as it rests one paw on the man’s leg and the growling posture. See the large teeth and open mouth of the tiger and the dragon bites of the arm of the other man. He looks scared and his eyes are wide open while the mouth looks as if he is screaming for help.
The dragon has entwined itself around the man while the other dragon is being held by the horns by the other man. Notice how the dragon is entwined in the surrounding rocks that have been carved from solid ivory. Sculpted in layers, each layer is visible and the artist has managed to carve the dragon’s body as if it is coming out from the deep inside of the cliffs. The unique sculpture is set on a carved wooden base that has delicate floral patterns.
